Chapter Thirteen

The Virtue of Patience

Eat. Clean. Train. Repeat. The first week aboard the space station had been one of mind-numbing monotony. Ever since they had placed him in the station’s military training program, he had felt his irritation growing. But Xavier found he barely had the energy to fan the flames of his anger. He wanted so much to hate, to cry, to lash out at those nearby. His exhausted body wouldn’t let him, however. Instead, when his training and responsibilities finally finished for the day, he would slump onto his bunk and fall into a dreamless sleep.

Of his sister, he had seen little, though it wasn’t for a lack of trying. Whilst he had been sent to train with the military recruits, Nuria had quickly been sent to learn under the station’s finest scientists. Every request he made to visit her had been delayed, avoided or just outright ignored. Of Isais, he had seen nothing at all. The soldier had left the Ososhi without so much as a goodbye and that had been the end of it. Though Xavier couldn’t help but wonder if Isais had had something to do with his posting into the military. If the grueling training Xavier was forced to endure daily was some sort of cruel joke on the commando’s part.

He picked up his utensil and spooned gray gloop into his mouth. He sat alone from the other recruits as they talked in small groups scattered around the mess hall. Occasionally someone would try to sit with him, but his brooding silence would soon send them scurrying. It took little effort to maintain the oppressive air of animosity that hung over him. Indeed, he was beginning to relish in it. If the universe was out to get him, it was doing a fine job. He glanced around the hall. This was space. This was life outside of Vermasse. This was something he had wished for. Yet the reality was nothing like he had hoped. His home was gone. His parents were dead. His sister was stationed on another part of the station and out of his reach. And he was stuck in the middle of the enemy. He choked down another mouthful of gruel.

The alarm sounded, signaling the end of lunch, and the rest of the recruits filed out of the room. Xavier sat, making a point to slowly down the rest of his food. It was flavorless and of a strange texture, but he forced it down regardless. An officer approached him, with short, angry steps. He was a small man that Xavier had seen many times but was thankful he was not placed in charge of Xavier’s unit. He had a face that Xavier had taken an instant dislike to.

“Recruit!” the officer barked. “On your feet.”

Xavier turned his glare to focus on the officer’s puffy red face. Slowly, and with an exaggerated display of effort, he pushed himself to his feet.

“Union recruit 35547! Tell me why you feel the need to remain here whilst your colleagues do their duties?!”

“Xavier.
